Everyone believes in something. Whether its in themselves, their career, a loved one, a religious system, or a god(s). What we sometimes forget is that what others believe is perhaps just as real or important to them as our belief system is to us. Often we are afraid of what we do not know, and so we belittle other’s beliefs and take up the concern of being “right” above all else.
“Religion” is only a human structure under which to explain and organize divine principles. Religion is often what causes disputes, hate, and war. It blinds us into seeing only the structure, and not the people standing beneath it.
So what is the solution to standing up for what we believe while also respecting the beliefs of others?
Darling believes you should not have to be defensive if you really believe in what you believe. If you are confident, you can present your perspectives without fear of what others think or disagree with. This way there is no need for anger, fighting, raised voices or blood pressures. On the flip side, if you aren’t confident, perhaps you should question your heart and embark on a quest for truth.
No matter what we believe, we should not stand in judgment of those outside our faith. Rather, we should take on a posture of genuine interest, a true desire to understand what keeps them believing—living by the principle that we have something to learn from everyone. Or, perhaps if we focus on the similarities, rather than the differences of our beliefs, we can actually start a conversation, and not a quarrel. By focusing on the commonalities, it provides a safe ground for discussion, even if it does lead to one person changing their perspective.
At Darling, we are proud to share what has changed us, and we want to engage you in a conversation. We believe first and foremost that God loves humanity, and that we matter to God. We believe God actually wants to have a personal relationship with us, and we are excited to explore this further in the pages of Darling. We hope to be a safe place for discussion, questions, and the sharing of stories of faith. On a closing note, since we should not walk in judgment, we ask you would have the posture of an open mind to our perspectives. Let’s comment, share, and even debate in all peacefulness, as we live a life of love.
How confident are you in what you believe? We’d love to hear your thoughts…
