For decades the denim jacket has weaved in and out of fashion, solidifying its spot among the classics. From its start as work wear for men in the early 1900s, to acting as a mode of self-expression for bikers and rockers in the ‘80s, to becoming a statement-making piece on fashionistas today, the jacket is no doubt one of the most stylistically versatile garments. It can be argued that it will forever be a timeless outerwear piece, which is the reason why many people set out to find one of their own.
If you find yourself in this journey of seeking the perfect denim jacket, there are a few pointers to abide by when committing to one that matches you. Not all denim jackets serve the same purpose. The first element on the checklist is to identify the jacket’s function in your wardrobe. Will you be wearing it casually over tribal print dresses and floral rompers? Or will the jacket peek out as a layering piece under your wool coat in the winter? Answering this question is essential to making the commitment 100% worth it. Once this general role has been established, you can begin to understand the qualities to look for.
If your jacket will serve as a layering piece, a medium to darker wash is more appropriate so as to match easily with other neutral outerwear colors. If you’re looking forward to throwing it over your festival ensembles, go for a lighter wash. A softer indigo complements prints and bright colors best. Align the fit of your jacket with its aesthetic, accordingly. A layering jacket should be snug and sit tighter against your body to make room for other outerwear. The fit of a casual denim jacket can be a bit more flexible. It doesn’t need to be as structured, so if you’re planning on rolling up the sleeves, have fun with going for slightly oversized boyfriend-fits.
In either of these options, if going the vintage route keep in mind that the nature of this genre is going to be thicker and sturdier in fabrication than its contemporary counterparts. A vintage Levi’s jacket will quickly insulate — something to keep in mind if you’re looking for one to keep warm during those chilly winters.
Whatever style you end up choosing, rock it with confidence. Know that you’ve made the right choice for you, and haven’t bought into a fleeting trend!

I’ve had a jean jacket for years and just never really considered it a viable “fashion option.” I’d like to pull it out of the closet and use it more though. Anyone have any styling options? I lean more towards classic/elegant/sweet style.

Hi Anna,
Styling your jean jacket according to your specific style is vital, so you’re on the right track. Try staying classic and pairing it with a monochrome look, all white or all black. A black tee, cropped black twill pants or slacks, and open toes to soften it up is a great place to start. If your location warms up a bit, try caping your jacket over your shoulders for a chic alternative to rock it.
Another option is throwing it over a spring or summer dress. Denim jackets go well with brighter prints and vibrant colors. Avoid looking too young by wearing the jacket over dresses with too short of a hem. Knee to shin length keeps things sophisticated!
