Blogging isn’t just for aspiring cookbook authors, fashionistas, or mothers of adorable children. It’s for anyone with a passion. A blog is a platform, a tool we can use to share stories, comment on society, and develop our own niche in the world. Blogging makes us active participants in the conversation, not just passive bystanders.
Need the extra push to start one? A blog can help you:
Become An Expert
Whether it’s the environment, baseball, or rescue puppies, we all have something that excites us. Blogging is a way you can turn those passions into areas of expertise. It’s a way to gain experience and show off knowledge in a tangible way — all in a field that’s not necessarily your day job or your degree. (Likewise, if you’re passionate about your current industry, a blog can help you reach the next level.)
Grow Your Online Presence
Considering that 48 percent of employers say they Google potential hires, a blog is an excellent way to bulk up your internet portfolio beyond 140 characters and selfies. You control the story on your blog, which means you get to show potential employers who you really are and what you really care about. It’s a chance to shine, not to mention having a regularly updated blog proves you’re hardworking and self-motivated. These are all skills employers covet.
Challenge Yourself
It may seem like everyone (and their mom) has a blog, but there’s a good reason for it. A blog is a way to shake things up if you’re in a rut or don’t feel challenged enough in the daily grind. It’s a chance to write, to photograph, to research, and it forces you to think outside the box.
Learn New Things
Blogging teaches you how to effectively communicate online, promote yourself, code in HTML, and so much more. While it’s up to you how deeply you dive into each of these topics, the opportunity is there.
Make A Difference
A blog is a great platform to make your voice heard on a topic that gets you fired up. Animal cruelty, the water crisis, sex trafficking, whatever it may be, you can make a difference by blogging — even if it’s just raising awareness in one person.
Have New Experiences
Writing a blog opens you up to new opportunities in both the virtual and real world. Through comments, social media, and your own research, you’ll get connected with other bloggers who share your same passion. Blogging expands your horizon beyond the screen and puts you in touch with people you may have never met otherwise.
Document Your Life
No one ever said you need thousands of followers to have a blog. If all you want to do is have a place to write and share thoughts about your family and your life, a blog is the perfect tool.
Whatever your reason for starting a blog, the most important thing is to be an authentic version of yourself. There’s a lot of noise on the internet and to have your voice heard you can’t mimic what others are doing. Don’t try and be something you’re not. Be yourself — the rest will follow.

I love to see other blogs share tips and benefits of blogging. I just started a blog with a friend this past January and it has been the most fun, challenging and fulfilling thing I’ve done in a long time. I’m completely obsessed with the blog and building our brand. I’ve learned SO much and found new interests that I didn’t know I had. I was in need of a creative and engaging environment to work in because my day job is very cut and dry. Blogging was my answer! If you are on the fence about starting a blog, I say do it! But don’t underestimate the amount of time and work that you have to put into it. Best of luck to all of those starting out!

I started blogging right after I graduated high school. I’ve never had more than 5 followers, but I could never imagine giving it up! It’s not about the followers. I love to write, I love sharing beautiful things, or just sharing things that are on my mind. And I really love looking back at all that has happened to me in the 5 years since I’ve been blogging. Totally worth it.

I love this – a lot happens in 5 years and seeing yourself grow and change is wonderful. Thanks for sharing!

Blogging is such a source of inspiration for me. It replenishes my creative well, and if I do a good job, it connects me with like-minded people.

Love this, Tina — so true!

Great read! Although I already have a blog, sometimes it’s challenging to keep going. You know, one of those “why bother” moments where you question your creativity or writing. Thanks for this post. I may not be your exact target but it’s just what I need. 🙂
Bianca Strzelczyk February 25, 2014
Sometimes you need to remember why you started in order to keep going forward! Thank you for reading and I’m glad you enjoyed it.

I have been debating starting a blog for so long now. I get discouraged when I stop to think, “Why would people want to read what I write? What am I going to say that will be unique or important?”…This way of thinking throws me off every time.
I liked reading your piece and it gives me a bit of confidence to know that it’s okay to make my blog for me and about me. Also love what you said about how having a blog would essentially force myself to learn new skills or really improve the skills I already have, things like writing, photography, research…I hadn’t thought of it like that before.
Thanks for writing!

Thanks for reading! I’m glad you found it helpful and I say go for it!

I LOVE this!! I started blogging about my everyday a few years ago as a new-mummy/crafter/military wife, i had no energy or time to phone up family or friends and tell them about how we were or what we were up to lately. I love blogging, its such a great way to count your blessings and has made me realize what a positive person I’m becoming, no one wants to put negative thoughts out there. sometimes its just a few words and thirty pictures of my kids but its such a positive place in my world, mostly my family and friends follow me or keep checking it, i don’t need blog fame too feel like its worthwhile!
Bianca Strzelczyk February 19, 2014
That’s such a beautiful way to look at it — that it makes you a more positive person! I love that so much. Thanks for sharing!

This article couldn’t have come at a better time. After a three year hiatus, I promised myself in the beginning of the year I would kick-start my passion of sharing my stories, inspirations and experiences once again. By reading this article, it reassures my foothold. Thank you.
Bianca Strzelczyk February 18, 2014
Thank you, Joanne, for your kind words! I’ve definitely been in your position before (more than once) — good luck with your blog!
Sarah February 17, 2014
Thank you for this! It’s always nice to think over why I’m really blogging. It seems that my blogging process has already really helped me personally grow over the past year, and I’m so grateful for it. I hope it can help me even more in the future!
Bianca Strzelczyk February 18, 2014
I completely agree with you on that — it’s not just for your readers, blogging does a lot for YOU!
