Wisdom from Doris (Age 86)

Sometimes when you see an old, wrinkly grandma, your first thought is “awe, how cute,” but not much more. Or, she is that old person walking miserably slow on the sidewalk that you can’t pass, or perhaps driving terribly because she can no longer see…our first thought isn’t that this woman must have a wealth of knowledge after living through World War II, the 60’s, and much more. Darling thinks we should take advantage of the wisdom of the grandmas of the world; this is why we interviewed one such lady. Meet Doris. In this photo she is in her 20’s, now she is 86 and has some words of wisdom for us…

“I will tell some about myself and hope it can help in your life’s travels. I was born to a loving Mom and Dad who didn’t have much, but what we had, we shared.  I remember singing with my three sisters (my brother came along much later) and my parents. What beautiful harmony whether around the  stove or working in the cotton fields of western Oklahoma.

I married fairly young, but still remember my future husband standing at the stove nervously tapping his leg on one of our first dates. He had a look that I knew was honest. I was right. We had two great boys who have made me proud and they married well.  Their wives are like daughters to me. I now have grandchildren and great grandchildren whom I deeply love.

Why am I so blessed? It comes from a loving, supporting, faithful family. And where did that come from? Certainly not myself alone. My husband and I lived a simple premise. It is found in the Bible. First Corinthians Chapter 13, verse 13. “Three things remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love.” My wish is that you find the same.

And I will add, it’s the little things in life that’s important. Love people and touch the hurting because this is a hurting world. We need each other and as we touch others, it will put a smile on our face and we grow strong inside. As you awake in the morning, count your blessings and hold your head high. Smile. And when trouble comes, you are ready to face things and overcome them. Love yourself.

God created only one like you. Be happy, have fun, YOU ARE SPECIAL.
